Hopper 3 Remote Volume Control Continuous

I just got the Hopper 3 installed today. The tech programmed my remote for both my TV and Soundbar. But the setting to use the "Volume & Mute Buttons" to control the AUX device "saves", but resets immediately when I leave the menu to "Control TV's Volume." He could not figure out why and had to leave.

I can control volume when in AUX mode, but if I can't get it to work while in SAT mode, my wife will kill me.

I tried to have it "Learn", but the learning mode doesn't seem to work either. When I'm in learning mode on screen, I follow the instructions. I click "mute" on the Hopper remote, then hold down mute on the soundbar remote. Nothing ever happens. No TV mode lights blink on the Hopper remote.

Any ideas?

I wouldn't sweat it right now. Since it was just installed give it some time to settle in and download all the stuff it needs. Assuming you tried a reboot to see if that makes it work properly? I have an external Bose system and the remote controls it fine. So this option does work! Try later tonight or tomorrow.

Crossing my fingers.

"Input" doesn't work on the remote either. It works on all my TVs except the main one (Sceptre). I'm guessing that just isn't going to work. It didn't in the past either. But the other TVs work great.

Good luck! Hopefully a Hopper reboot will help.

Since you mentioned the input button works on other TV's I am assuming then that you have the "Limited Mode" setting in the remote diagnostic screen set to OFF. That setting does affect the input button function.

No idea why the learning mode is not working on the remote. By the way, what model remote are you using? Do not know if totally new to Dish or if you may have had prior equipment and you still have the prior remotes (model 40, big one with all the color buttons). Where you could try that one instead to see if that works.

I've been with DISH for 16 years. The installer took my remotes. I didn't think I'd need them going forward. At least he left my batteries.

Input works in the sense that it opens the Input menu on my TV. It just doesn't cycle through the input options when I click input again.

Perhaps the TV code being used is not the correct one?

It's a Sceptre ultraHD 50"

I'll keep trying codes I guess.

Have you rebooted the h3 yet? If it's not saving settings a reboot essential.

Yes. Via the red reset button. A few times. Nothing has worked yet. I have to say the box seems like an upgrade. But the remote seems like a big downgrade. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet. But the buttons seem in the wrong places and hard to find by shape compared to the old one.

I also noticed that when I turn the TV off, the sound continues in the sound bar. I have to hit the sat power button too now. I'm hoping that is a setting.

Got my first angry text this morning asking WTH was going on with the audio. ha ha. I sure hope this resolves itself soon.

Sceptre TVs use Sony codes for universal remotes if that helps.

This is because you are only cutting power to the TV and not the DVR. It can actually be a good thing if you want to hear the SiriusXM music channels without watching the static screen. We do this with our surround sound in the living room when we are cooking or whatever in a different room.

Really odd that by now this has not corrected itself. I know of no other setting on a Hopper that would cause it to not save any settings once you set them.

Personally, I would do a hard reset. Unplug the Hopper for a few minutes (I know they say 15-30 seconds but I err on the side of longer) then plug back in. See if a hard reset does anything.

Brodieb is correct on the connections. Connect to the TV audio output if you want to stop the audio when TV shuts off. I have it like this.

One thing that has always frustrated me with my sound system (Bose Cinemate II) is that is does not have a standby mode. Where in effect I could power off the TV, let the Hopper HDMI CEC (eventually, grrr!) turn off the Hopper and then the Bose system would simply go into standby when there is no audio signal detected for a set time (and not a full power off like it does). Then I could power on the Hopper, TV automatically comes on because of CEC, then the Bose could also come out of standby when it detected an audio signal again. Have to keep powering it on.

I know, I know, use a Harmony or other remote. I do in the home theater that I mainly use but the rest of the family hates when the universal remote doesn't fire all the devices because they forget to keep pointing it at the equipment until it turns on (IR). Technology...

This actually starting working as before. When I turn off the TV, the receiver goes on standby now.

Yay, it works!! I pulled the plug and let it sit for about a minute. Finally, it started working.
